Archibald Morris
“Archibald Morris (1915-1985). (colourised) This I presume to be a formal graduation photo of my father in the uniform of a Radio Officer, 3rd Class (single arm band stripe). Other records indicate that he graduated from the College on Sept. 9th, 1941, Special Class C6555 (not sure of the meaning of that classification).”

“WTC Room 2 group photo and names and addresses of those in the photo on the reverse. My father, Archibald (Archie) Morris is standing at the back of the group, and he wrote his name and address on the reverse of the photo but sadly not in the order in which he appears on the photo. Consequently, I do not know which name and address corresponds with which of the other four men in the photo. However, the first named, P. G. Wooldridge from Looe, Cornwall, did record the date on which I presume the photo was taken, July 18, 1941, possibly reflecting the time at which they graduated from the College.”
“A photo of my father operating the radio in what I believe to have been the WT Room of the M.V. Sutherland (a deduction based in part upon the single stripe on the sleeve of his jacket and comparison with a captioned photo of another 3rd Class Radio Officer operating the same equipment). He joined the M.V. Sutherland in Cardiff on Nov. 20, 1941 and served as a 3rd Class Radio Officer on that vessel until he signed off it in Hull on June 25, 1943.”
“He qualified as a Radio Officer 1st Class in August 1943 (C/3301) and served on various ships at that rank for the remainder of his career with Marconi: S.S. Monkleigh. Signed on Aug. 28, 1943 in Middlesboro; signed off Aug. 26, 1944 in London. That vessel Commenced Operational Articles on May 5th, 1944 and was present at the D-Day landings between June 7th and 14th, 1944. S.S. Empire Mariner. Signed on Sept. 26, 1944 in East Hartlepool; signed off June 15th, 1945 in Liverpool. S.S. Empire Lionel. Signed on July 5th, 1945 in Hull. The vessel was re-named the S.S. Levenpool in late September/early October on foot of purchase by Sir. R. Ropner & Co. S.S. Levenpool. Signed on Oct. 1st, 1945 in Middlesboro; signed off Dec. 20, 1946 in Glasgow and resigned from service with Marconi on Jan. 25, 1947. The final colourised photo of a group of officers from what I believe to be the S.S. Levenpool , in front of the great Pyramids at Giza, Egypt was taken about April/May 1946. My father is on the camel second from the left and while his arm stripes are concealed, that of a Radio Officer 3rd Class are visible on the sleeve of the officer to his right. I assume the choice of mount reflected his rank! Radio remained my father’s passion for the rest of his life and though he explored the possibility of working at Portishead Radio, near Burnham-on-Sea, Somerset, during the 1950s, that interest was maintained principally through his very active involvement in amateur radio activities call sign G3EUZ.”
